Development studio Crystal Dynamics is known for one triple-AAA franchise and that's Tomb Raider. So with plenty of people having been sacked, and word that the company is working on a reboot of the series, the following job opening is quite interesting:

Quote

Crystal Dynamics is looking for a talented, innovative senior designer to lead on future AAA title development for XBox 360 and PS3. This position requires the ability to create a distinct multiplayer experience. Candidates should be creative, practical and passionate about games, a team player and works well in highly collaborative environments

Sounds like the next Tomb Raider will have multiplayer?

It's been a while since we've heard anything about the next Tomb Raider, but a job posting on Gamasutra by Crystal Dynamics might shed some light on at least one aspect of the game.

They don't call the game by name, but the ad says they are "looking for a talented, innovative lead designer on future AAA title development for XBox 360 and PS3," which fits the bill. It goes on to note that "[t]he candidate we're looking for will have current multiplayer, systems and technical experience and excels in highly collaborative, team environments."

It later states one requirement is the "ability to design multiplayer maps from written map designs," which makes it sound like a deathmatch mode, though that doesn't mean there couldn't also be co-op.

Cinema Blend notes that "in an interview last fall, Crystal Dynamics' creative director Eric Lindstrom stated last fall that they consider multiplayer features with each new installment and 'next time could be the one.' Publisher Eidos has been looking for a way to revitalize the franchise, too."

So, in a way, this shouldn't come as any great surprise. It should be interesting to see how they go about it, though.

Conspicuous by its absence, though, is mention of a Wii version. One could speculate that it would be handled by a different team, or that it simply wouldn't have multiplayer. Or, it could just be a mere oversight. It's hard to say at this point.
