Quote

As heroes go, he isn't either chocolate-faced or macho. Yet, Irrfan Khan has an arresting presence. Droopy eyes and a constant intense look make him a frontrunner in unconventional cinema.
Currently the actor is making waves abroad. He's drawn applause for his work in Mira Nair's The Namesake and has just finished working on Michael Winterbottom's A Mighty Heart -- opposite Angelina Jolie, no less.

He just made his Telugu debut with Sainikudu, playing a villain. His Bollywood lineup is an interesting one: Kaushik Roy's Apna Asman deals with the subject of good parenting; then there's Anurag Basu's Metro, and Aditya Bhattacharya's Dubai Return -- which, he feels, is a comedy on the lines of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron.

Priyanka Jain caught up with Irrfan, and asked the actor about Angelina, Mira, and more. Read on.

'Angelina is very spontaneous'

First things first, describe Angelina Jolie.
Angelina Jolie is a very intelligent and strong woman. She is very spontaneous and knows her craft well. I was playing the CID inspector who helps the character of Marianne Pearl (Jolie), so was working closely with her during the shoot.

What about Brad Pitt, the film's producer?

Brad Pitt is a very attractive guy not just physically, but mentally too. His earnestness and honesty just adds to his persona. He is very down to earth. One does not meet people like that everyday.

Whenever you meet a celebrity, they take it for granted that people are going to like them. But Brad and Angelina would talk with respect to everybody from the spot-boy to a co-actor. And I never saw any attitude from them.

'Brangelina did their own research'

Apart from work, what kind of conversations did you have with Angelina and Brad?
Angelina, Brad and I used to talk about a range of things. They are generally curious about life. They weren't socialising that much but were looking around, seeing places, and were overwhelmed by some places like Banaras and Jodhpur that they visited.

They had done their own research about the places they wanted to see in India. They are not new to traveling across the world. They were in Pakistan when the earthquake happened. They went to Afghanistan and Uganda recently. They enjoyed Indian cuisine too and ate everything from dal makhani to chicken tikkas on the set.

Their bodyguards allegedly misbehaved with the media...

The day the protests started I was with Brad in the hotel. I wasn't shooting with Angelina then. The issue was not as big as it was made out to be. They were surprised, thinking what to do. They then went to meet the police commissioner.

Initially they were hassled with the media. After the incident happened they spoke to one channel to put across their point of view, but then every channel wanted to talk to them. However, they decided talking to one channel was enough to put across their point.
