Last week we brought you the depressing news that the most holy of holy science fiction classics, The Day the Earth Stood Still, was on its way to being remade by 20th Century Fox. Now there’s more on the movie’s impending (at certain to suck) modernization. This isn’t going to be a half-hearted, low-budget cast, rush job. IESB claims they’ve offered a part in the film to the biggest female star on the planet: Angelina Jolie.
Also considering his options is may be Scott Derrickson, who is supposed to be up to direct it. Derrickson lifted himself out of the realm of direct-to-dvd garbage back in 2005 when he helmed Excorcism of Emily Rose, and basically blew everyone away. Apparently his work on that has now earned him a gig directing a big-time Angelina Jolie movie. He’s also got several other high-profile movies on his schedule, including a movie version of John Milton’s Paradise Lost which may end up starring Casino Royale star and new James Bond Daniel Craig as Lucifer.
Now keep in mind here that no one is saying that either Derrickson or Jolie are a lock for Day the Earth Stood Still. IESB swears they have the inside track, even though Fox’s PR people have apparently come out and denied the whole thing. Even if IESB does have their story right, neither Jolie or Derrickson has actually signed on the dotted line yet. They’ve just been offered a job.
If Angelina Jolie ends up in the movie, and if they don’t completely bastardize the film’s basic plot to appeal to teenage boys who like wearing girls too-tight pants, then Jolie will most likely end up in the part of a widow named Helen Benson. It’s the biggest female part in the original 1951 movie. The story goes something like this… an alien named Klaatu lands on Earth with his robot and demands to see his leaders and deliver an important, world-saving message. He gets frustrated with the bickering between our planet’s governments and goes out to meet the people. He then encounters Helen and her family. The movie is really about heavy political subtext more than aliens or spaceships as Klaatu’s mission of goodwill is rejected and stymied at every turn. The trick in remaking it will be not just holding that, but translating it into modern day relevance.

The Day the Earth Stood StillSince War of the Worlds fared well at the box office studios have begun to looks for other sci fi classics to throw on the remake chopping block.
What's next? Though I still can't believe this is true, Fox has confirmed that a remake for The Day the Earth Stood Still is definitely in the works.
Better yet, they are going to try to squeeze it out by next year!
The Day the Earth Stood Still Remake Coming Quick
The good people over at FirstShowing broke the story after discovering a little piece of information over at Box Office Mojo.
...has updated their schedule for summer 2008 and included a listing of The Day the Earth Stood Still to open on May 9th, 2008 (one week after Iron Man). The original is a sci-fi classic 1951 movie about an alien and a robot that land on Earth to try and save the world from being destroyed. IMDB doesn't even have a listing for this remake, but Box Office Mojo claims it's being produced by Fox, fast-tracked for a spot in 2008′s busy summer.
Just when I was ready to report my doubts on this project, Fox responded to Alex Billington's claims by confirming that the release date for The Day the Earth Stood Still was correct. Or, at least, summer 2008.
Billington asks the next most important question - Who to direct?
Stay tuned for updates.
