A Mighty Heart
A Mighty Heart - Movie Review
"A Mighty Heart" Overview

Rating: R
2007

Cast and Crew
Director : Michael Winterbottom
Producer : Brad Pitt,Dede Gardner,Andrew Eaton
Screenwiter : Jon Orloff
Starring : Angelina Jolie,Dan Futterman,Archie Panjabi,Irrfan Khan,Will Patton,Denis O'Hare,Adnan Siddiqui,Gary Wilmes

It's a sign of filmmaking prowess, and occasionally genius, when a director can hand viewers a scenario with a foregone conclusion and make them get lost in the story anyway. In A Mighty Heart, Michael Winterbottom shows that he is definitely that kind of director, flinging us into a panicked maelstrom of chases and false leads that all lead to the same murderous finale, one that is likely clear even to people unfamiliar with the true story the film is closely molded from. Daniel Pearl, respected and beloved journalist for the Wall Street Journal, was kidnapped in Karachi in late January 2002 as he was researching a story on the shoe-bomber Richard Reid. His pregnant wife, journalist Mariane Pearl, marshals an ad-hoc group of his co-workers, Pakistani police, and U.S. officials to find him before it's too late. They're too late.

At the time, Pearl's kidnapping was like a tertiary aftershock to 9/11, proving that nobody was safe. The World Trade Center, international symbol of dominating Western capitalism, made sense as a target. Pearl, a universally respected journalist (evidence shows that "beloved" would actually not have been too strong a description of people's feelings about him) who wanted only to understand the terrorists and to explain them to the world, made no sense. And it's that swirling fog of frightened confusion that Winterbottom evokes so powerfully in A Mighty Heart, one of the best films yet made about modern terrorism.

Based on Mariane Pearl's account of the kidnapping, Winterbottom's lighty-scripted film is a heady and atmospheric film that meshes the hazy rush of the early parts of his Road to Guantanamo with the sharp and detail-oriented reportage of a particularly good Frontline episode. We see relatively little of Danny (played by Dan Futterman, who bears an extraordinary likeness) before he disappears on his way to meeting an extremist cleric, Sheikh Gilani. The rest of the film clicks together in quick fashion as the alarm bells begin to go off: Danny's editor flies over from the U.S., the embassy gets involved, FBI agents show up, as do multiple elements of Pakistani law-enforcement. The clues are thin, but the resources devoted to finding Danny come off as truly astounding, with a massive Pakistani-U.S. team chasing the faintest of leads down thronging Karachi streets. The heat of the hunt doesn't make Winterbottom ignore the street detail; although admiring of Daniel Pearl, he knows quite well that had he not been a well-known American reporter, barely one-hundredth of these same resources would have been deployed for his rescue.

At the middle of this storm is Mariane, played under surprisingly effective makeup by Angelina Jolie (Mariane herself is Dutch and Afro-Cuban), who shows that yes, she can still act when she wants to these days; but sadly still can't do an authentic accent to save her life. Many coming to the Pearls' story for the first time will find Jolie an oddly sedate presence here, as audiences are more used to seeing her in high-camp (Alexander) or animal magnetism (Girl, Interrupted) mode. But Jolie was handed a difficult role here, as the real-life Mariane -- at least, the persona she portrayed in the excellent 2006 documentary The Journalist and the Jihadi -- is possessed of an almost preternatural calm that could leave some frustrated at not seeing more fireworks, particularly given the extreme situation she is flung into. In short, Jolie has to play a real person, and not a movie-star interpretation of a real person. She had to; only a real person could get away with saying, as she does later in the film, "I am not terrorized." In the mouth of an actress, such words would seem ridiculous. She and Winterbottom forgo almost every opportunity to tart it up, to give her great emotional climaxes, instead rushing ahead in the manner of a classic, beat-the-clock crime procedural.

Since most of the characters here puzzling through this tangled kidnapping plot are revealed only in short glimpses and hacked-off shards of conversation, it's fortunate that Winterbottom has assembled such a crack cast. From Broadway veteran Denis O'Hare, as Pearl's hasty and impatient editor, to Bollywood star Irfan Khan as the imperturbably cool Pakistani counter-terrorism officer, it's a uniformly stellar assemblage. They elegantly portray the humanity of the multifarious people caught up in this baffling story, where clues seem to lead only to more clues, deeper and deeper into an extremist underground that appears to stretch on forever, a twilight world that only rare people like Daniel Pearl cared (or dared) to explore without being forced to. And now, fewer probably will.

A mighty meeting.

JOLIE'S FILM TRAUMA
ANGELINA JOLIE was so traumatised making new movie A MIGHTY HEART, she had to be comforted on set by partner BRAD PITT. Jolie stars as Marianne Pearl, whose journalist husband Daniel was kidnapped and beheaded by Pakistani militants in 2002. She tells Eve magazine, "It was such a gruelling film, I needed to be near Brad and the children."

So, as I promised you, here is my comment of the movie.
In fact it's the comment I put on Belgium's national cinema website (Cinébel). And just want to share my opinion with you Angelina fans as I shared it with Belgian moviegoers.
Two months ago I read Mariane Pearl’s book « A Mighty heart » ; touching and moving book, it makes the reader think about serious issues in this world and above all it makes us respect and admire Mrs Pearl. She had all the reasons to hate the world, the people ; she could have (and she thought about it for a short while) committed suicide to escape her nightmare and to prevent her son to come, Adam, from living in this sick world. But, no, she believes in life and in mankind, in tolerance, in mutual understanding of cultures, races, she has a message she wants to deliver us to contribute to a better world.
This afternoon (Saturday September 15, 2007) I went to see the movie and believe me, it was hard not to cry (men don’t cry … not true, I couldn’t help it) when I saw her sorrow and distress. Mariane is fantastically well interpreted by our remarkable Angelina Jolie. What an actress ! I knew she is excellent, talented and so professional ; I was absolutely mesmerized by the way she plays Mariane. Angie has such a gift of empathy. It was a challenge for her : playing the role of a woman who is alive (and who has become a sincere friend of hers) and who has been confronted to such a nightmare without disappointing her (it was her most difficult role in her career up to date, she was afraid of not being able to cope with the demands and expectations of the part). And believe me, she’s great and convincing.
We didn’t see Angelina on the screen but Mariane Pearl !
Before watching the movie I knew Angie is one of the greatest actresses but now I dare say : she is the best and the greatest actress of all time.
You cannot help sharing the feelings of the character she plays : we get angry with her, we cry with her, we hope with her. She is admirable.
Go and see this movie, it will make you think about many issues, it shows you that strentgh is the answer to everything : committing suicide would have been doing what the terrorists expected her to do, but, no she defeated them by being willing to live, by working, by giving birth to Adam.
Long live life, long live respect, long live tolerance, long live the diversity of cultures, of races, of mentalities and
a big cheer for Angie’s more than remarkable interpretation of Mariane.

Jolie nudged into best-actress race
Santa Barbara fest jump-starts “A Mighty Heart.”
By Mark Olsen, The Envelope
October 15, 2007

Coming one day before the release of "A Mighty Heart" on DVD, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced Monday that it would be honoring Angelina Jolie with its Outstanding Performance of the Year Award for her role as Mariane Pearl in Michael Winterbottom's summer drama.

Jolie will receive the award at a special event in Santa Barbara on Feb. 2.

The timing of the announcement and DVD release appear perfectly poised to kick-start a campaign to put Jolie in the Oscar race for best actress.

Numerous prognosticators have already noted that there is a rather thin field of viable competitors in the category this year, unlike the bulging-over best actor and supporting categories.

For now, the main competition for best actress looks to be from Julie Christie ("Away From Her"), Ellen Page ("Juno"), Marion Cotillard ("La Vie en Rose"), Keira Knightley ("Atonement") and Laura Linney ("The Savages"), with such performers as Halle Berry ("Things We Lost in the Fire") and Amy Adams ("Enchanted") waiting in the wings.

A performer with the star power of Jolie may be able to nudge her way back in.

Though "A Mighty Heart" was thought to have underperformed at the box office after its early-summer release, Jolie's performance received uniformly positive notices.

In a news release, Roger Durling, executive director of the SBIFF, commented, "We are honored to celebrate Ms. Jolie in what is arguably one of the most extraordinary female roles of the year."

Film festival to honor Jolie for role in 'A Mighty Heart'
By Brett Johnson (Contact)
Sunday, October 21, 2007

Angelina Jolie will receive the Outstanding Performance of the Year Award at the upcoming Santa Barbara International Film Festival for her turn in "A Mighty Heart," festival organizers have announced.

Jolie starred as Mariane Pearl, the wife of murdered Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, in "A Mighty Heart," which was based on Mariane Pearl's same-titled book about her husband. He was kidnapped and killed by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002 while pursuing a story involving a shoe bomber and al-Qaida.

Festival director Roger Durling said he was pleased to honor Jolie for "what is arguably one of the most extraordinary female roles of the year." She will get the award Feb. 2.

She previously won an Oscar for her supporting role in "Girl Interrupted." She also starred with companion Brad Pitt in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." She will appear in the upcoming film "Beowulf" and is slated to be in Clint Eastwood's "The Changeling."

Earlier this month, festival organizers announced that Cate Blanchett will receive the Modern Master Award, the event's highest honor, on Jan. 26. Blanchett won an Oscar for her turn as Katharine Hepburn in "The Aviator" and currently stars as Queen Elizabeth I in "Elizabeth: The Golden Age." Her other credits include "Babel" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

The 23rd annual Santa Barbara festival will take place from Jan. 24 to Feb. 3. It sits amid the fervor over Oscar nominations and the Academy Awards show itself and typically attracts Hollywood A-listers. Past honorees have included George Clooney, Will Smith, Helen Mirren, Jodie Foster, Leonardo DiCaprio and Diane Keaton.
