Expanding nationwide after a weekend in limited release was Clint Eastwood's "Changeling," which took in $9.4 million to finish at No. 4. The Universal Pictures drama stars Angelina Jolie as a single mother victimized by police who botched the investigation into her missing son.

Reviews from ContactMusic :

Quote

Clint Eastwood's Changeling received mostly solid reviews for the director and for Angelina Jolie, its star, when it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last May. They do not fare so well with the U.S. critics as the film opens in wide release today (Friday) following a limited release a week ago. A.O. Scott in the New York Times calls it "this baggy, grandiose movie," and says that Jolie's acting "insists on being regarded as a great performance and may, indeed, be mistaken for one." Elizabeth Weitzman in the New York Daily News says of Jolie's performance "Instead of seeing an average woman facing extraordinary circumstances, we're asked to admire an extraordinary woman - an international superstar - pretending to be average. This ultimately makes the movie more about the actress than the woman she's playing." The movie is being released as Oscar season dawns -- something that several critics take note of in their reviews. Writing in the Washington Post , John Anderson comments, "Jolie gets to do all the messy scenes that Oscar voters suck up like oysters at a free buffet." Roger Moore in the Orlando Sentinel concludes "That it isn't the emotional, surprising and engrossing Oscar contender Eastwood set out to make is one of the bigger disappointments of the fall." On the other hand, Lou Lumenick in the New York Post writes that "Jolie is in Oscar-caliber form" in the movie, which he describes as "beautifully crafted" by Eastwood. And Mick LaSalle applauds in the San Francisco Chronicle ; " Changeling is a disturbing film about grim subject matter, but the overall experience is more exhilarating than saddening. There's just something satisfying about seeing a movie so well made."

Angie plays characters she feels connected to, and of course it's the case in "Changeling".

Quote

ANGELINA JOLIE broke down in tears on Monday (17Nov08) as she revealed her late mother inspired her to take on the lead role in new movie CHANGELING.
The actress plays Christine Collins, a woman who's left devastated by the disappearance of her young son in the Clint Eastwood-directed film.
And at a press conference in London to promote the movie, Jolie recalled the passion and dedication of her own mother Marcheline Bertrand, who died of cancer in 2007.
Fighting back the tears, Jolie said, "She was very much Christine Collins. She was really sweet and was never angry - she couldn't swear to save her life. But when it came to her kids, she was really fierce and so this is very much her, her story.
"She was the woman I related to, who had that elegance and strength through just knowing what was right."
Jolie is already being tipped for an Oscar-nomination at next year's ceremony (09) after she wowed critics with her moving performance in the film.

I went to see the movie last Sunday. What else could I say : it's great art. The movie in itself is excellent and though some critics say the end is a bit longish, I don't agree with that, it's realistic, because Christine Collins cannot be sure, and will never be, that her abducted son has been killed, may be he managed to escape ... There is hope.
Once more, Angie plays perfectly : she conveys the feelings like no other actor or actress, she is in her role, she is actually Christine ! Dramatic situation, you have in front of you a desperate mother ... I couldn't hold my tears back during the movie.
Go and see it ! And if you are non-native speaker, do see it in original version because nobody can voice Angie in a decent way. I saw the trailer in French, but it me it was no good. Even if your English is not that could, it's better to have the real voice to help yourself understanding reading the subtitles.
Changeling is a real masterpiece !
